Friends visit to The Fan Museum

Friends of The French Hospital enjoyed a private tour of The Fan Museum in Greenwich on 24 July 2017. Museum Director and founder Mrs Hélène Alexander and Curator Jacob Moss spoke to us about the history of fan-making and key Huguenot makers.

We had the pleasure of seeing a fan on display that was designed by Francis Chassereau, a member of a Huguenot family of fan makers. Francis joined the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers as member no. 519 and was elected to the Court of the Company in 1721 at the early age of 23. Granted naturalization in 1743, in 1761 he was made a Director of The French Hospital.

Mrs Alexander also treated our Friends to a private tour of the Museum stores where beautiful handcrafted  walnut cases hold the Museum’s treasures. Following the tour we all enjoyed afternoon tea in the Orangery.
