2016 Heritage Open Day Success

The French Hospital took part in Heritage Open Days on Saturday, 10 September.

Heritage Open Days is the country’s largest heritage festival with around 5,000 events, over 40,000 volunteers and more than three million visitors taking part. Celebrating local history, architecture and culture, the event offers everyone the chance to see hidden places and experience something new – all of which are completely free to explore.

Over 200 visitors went on a guided tour of our site and visited the private Huguenots’ Garden which features plants that would have been familiar to gardeners of the 16th and 17th centuries in France and England. A few Residents were on hand to share their Huguenot family history and a fantastic selection of homemade refreshments was on offer during the event. We are pleased to report that we raised £245 from the sale of refreshments and we received this lovely feedback:

“Really enjoyed this event— I have lived in Rochester for 20 years and never knew this estate was such a tardis! Pretty gardens, delicious cake, and interesting people to talk to. Thank you for sharing your homes.”

Please mark your diaries for next year’s event which will take place on Saturday, 9 September 2017.
